<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect abnormality of the blow-by gas treating mechanism without providing a sensor in a blow-by gas passage. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine 1 is provided with a blow-by gas treating mechanism re-supplying blow-by gas to an intake air passage 2 via a PCV valve 10. Opening of the PCV valve 10 is changed by predetermined quantity and fluctuation of output torque of the internal combustion engine 1 is compensated by correction of ignition timing of the internal combustion engine during idling operation of the internal combustion engine 1. An engine controller 20 determines existence of abnormality of the blow-by gas treating mechanism based on change quantity of operation parameters such as intake manifold pressure, engine speed, and air-fuel ratio feedback addendum coefficient which accompany opening change of the PCV valve 10.
