A method of making a preform in a mold, where the mold is adapted so that the preform remains in-mold during subsequent processing to a composite molded article, is disclosed. The method comprises the steps: (a) providing reinforcing material, (b) providing binder blend material, (c) mixing the reinforcing material and the binder blend material in a venturi so that the binder material adheres to the reinforcing material, (d) applying a stream of the mixture exiting from a constricted opening of the venture through a heating zone to a prepared surface of a mold tool, where the applying is conducted without use of a plenum system, (e) applying a stream or curtain of gaseous cooling media to the material on the prepared surface, and (f) sufficiently solidifying the mixture to form the preform in the mold, where the preform remains in the mold during subsequent processing to a composite article.
