The present invention relates to the use of a compound represented by the following general formula [I] or a salt thereof for manufacturing a medicament for preventing or treating macular degeneration:
wherein the ring A represents a benzene ring or a naphthalene ring;
X represents a single bond, an alkylene group or -CH 2 COOCH 2 -;
Y represents an oxygen atom or N(R 6 );
R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are the same or different and represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, or R 1 and R 3 may be joined together to form a ring having one or more double bonds;
R 4 and R 5 are the same or different and represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group; and
R 6 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group.
