PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound or the like which can be suitably used for manufacturing a light-controlling film giving a higher haze value. SOLUTION: The phenyl acrylate is represented by formula (I), wherein R represents a methyl group or a hydrogen atom. The film can also be used as a laminate by covering or adhering to transparent base materials such as a glass plate and a plastic sheet. The obtained laminate, for example, can be used as optical films such as a window for a building material, a window for a vehicle, a mirror, an outer wall material for a greenhouse, a flat panel display, and a rear projection display.
