Water soluble or water-swellable polymer (Q) comprising (a) 20-98.99 mol.% of one or more nitrogen containing structural units (I); (b) 1-79.99 mol.% of one or more carbonyl containing structural units (II); and (c) 0.01-8 mol.%, preferably 0.25-1.5 mol.% of one or more crosslinking structural units, which are one or more monomer with at least two olefinic double bonds, is new. Water soluble or water-swellable polymer (Q) comprising (a) 20-98.99 mol.% of one or more nitrogen containing structural units of formula ([-CH 2-CR 1>(C(=O)-NH-A-S(=O) 2-O ->)-] (Q +>)) (I); (b) 1-79.99 mol.% of one or more carbonyl containing structural units of formula ([CH 2-CR1a(C(=O)-[O-B 1>-C(=O)] n-O ->)-] (X +>)) (II); (c) 0.01-8 mol.%, preferably 0.25-1.5 mol.% of one or more crosslinking structural units, which are one or more monomer with at least two olefinic double bonds, is new. R 1>, R1a : H, CH 3or C 2H 5; A : 1-12C-alkyl, preferably 1-8C-alkyl; Q +>, X +>H +>, NH 4 +>or organic ammonium ion [HNR 5>R 6>R 7>] +>, Li +>, Na +>, K +>, 1/2 Ca +> +>, 1/2 Mg +> +>, 1/2 Zn +> +>and/or 1/3 Al +> +> +>; R 5>-R 7>H, 1-22C alkyl, one or more time unsaturated 2-22C alkenyl, 6-22C-alkylamidopropyl, 2-10C monohydroxyalkyl or 3-10C dihydroxyalkyl; B 1>1-6C alkyl, preferably -CH 2CH 2-; and n : 1-10, preferably 1-4. Where at least one of R 5>-R 7>is not H. Independent claims are included for: (1) the preparation of (Q); and (2) a cosmetic, dermatological or pharmaceutical composition comprising 0.01-10 wt.%, preferably 0.5-2 wt.% of (Q).
