PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal medium and a liquid crystal display. SOLUTION: Provided is a dielectrically positive nematic medium comprising one or more kinds of compounds represented by formula I, and one or more kinds of dielectrically neutral compounds, and the liquid crystal displays provided with the media, especially an active matrix display, more specially TN-, IPS-, FFS- and OCB-displays. (In the formula, R<SP>11</SP>and R<SP>12</SP>are each independently an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, a fluorinated alkyl group or a fluorinated alkoxy group, an alkenyl group, an alkenyloxy group, an alkoxyalkyl group or a fluorinated alkenyl group).
