<p>An access permission sticky bit flag is set to a default state on set up 210 and is adjusted in accordance with an application instruction 220. The sticky bit is protected from adjustment in violation of the permission indication 230. The flag may indicate access permission to an encryption key or to an initialisation vector, preferably with independent indicators for a first unchanging original vector and a second updatable vector. The flag may indicate read or write permission and the default state, which may indicate full read or full write permission, is preferably only set by a system-on-chip reset and not by a simple module reset. There are further disclosures relating to the use of sticky bit flags in a secure encryption method with secure/non-secure partitioned access permissions.
