A deterrent apparatus having a non-conductive tubing (12) having a length, an outer surface (12b) and an inner surface (12a) defining a lumen, and at least a first electrical conductor (14a) and a second electrical conductor (14b) present on the outer surface of the non-conductive tubing. A power source (16) comprising a battery having a first terminal and a second terminal is connected to the conductors so that the first terminal is electrically connected to the first conductor and the second terminal is electrically connected to the second conductor. The deterrent apparatus is suitable for use on medical tubing or veterinary tubing, for example, to deter animals from chewing or biting at the tubing.
