PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new compound suitably usable as a surfactant and low in bioaccumulation, to provide a method of fluoropolymer production using the new compound, and to provide a surfactant and an aqueous fluoropolymer dispersion, using the new compound. SOLUTION: A fluoroethercarboxylic acid represented by general formula (I): Rf<SP>1</SP>OCHFCF<SB>2</SB>ORf<SP>2</SP>COOM (I) is provided, (wherein Rf<SP>1</SP>represents a partially or fully fluorinated alkyl group, which may optionally be interrupted with an oxygen atom; Rf<SP>2</SP>represents a partially or fully fluorinated alkylene group, which may optionally be interrupted with an oxygen atom; and M represents a monovalent alkali metal, NH<SB>4</SB>or H).
