Producing open-cell urethane group containing rigid foam material comprises reacting polyisocyanates with compounds containing at least two hydrogen atoms which are reactive towards isocyanate groups in the presence of a catalyst and a foaming agent, where: the compounds contain an alcohol with a functionality of 2.5-3.5 and exhibit a hydroxyl number of 200-400 mg potassium hydroxide (KOH)/g; a mixture is made from water and at least one fundamental foaming agent, as foaming agent; and the reaction is carried out with an isocyanate index of 150-400.
