PHOSPHOR AND LED LAMP USING THE PHOSPHOR

This invention provides a phosphor characterized by having a composition represented by chemical formula (1) Ln3axAl5-x-yßyO12:Ce ······(1) wherein Ln represents at least one element selected from Y, Lu, and Gd; a and ß represent elements in pairs, provided that a combination of a and ß, i.e. (a, ß), is any one of (Mg, Si), (B, Sc), and (B, In); and x and y represent coefficients satisfying, in terms of atomic ratio, relational expressions of x < 2, y < 2, and 0.9 = x/y = 1.1. The phosphor is used in combination with a blue light emitting diode having a luminescence peak wavelength of 430 to 470 nm to form an LED lamp. The phosphor can effectively supplement a red light emitting component. The use of the phosphor in an LED lamp can provide an LED lamp which can emit light having excellent color rendering properties.
