[Also in Group VIII] A web 10, prior to formation into a filter rod, is passed through corrugating rollers 11 having co-operating ridges 16 and valleys 19, each ridge having sharp edges 18 which co-operate with concave surfaces in the valleys 19 to produce irregular tears in the web. The web is preferably of thin cellulosic crepe tissue and, after passing through the rollers 10, is passed around a roller 13 with oppositely directed spiral grooves thereon which initiate lateral compacting of the web into a rod-like formation.
