<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color filter for a liquid crystal display wherein level difference of superposition of a matrix part is reduced, an entire surface is made flat and a frame part has satisfactory optical density and to provide the liquid crystal display. <P>SOLUTION: In the color filter having a black matrix 4 comprising the matrix part 2 and the frame part 3 enclosing a region (display part) of colored pixels, the matrix part is constituted of discontinued independent patterns. The film thickness of the frame part is thicker than the film thickness of the matrix part.
