The exemplary embodiments provide a computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for storing data associated with a Simple Network Management Protocol managed information base. A storage area identifier that defines a storage area is reserved. The storage area does not have an associated pre-defined set of identifiers that a user can perform Simple Network Management Protocol operations on. An input is received from a requester, wherein the input comprises an input identifier. A determination is made as to whether storage area identifier is a prefix of the input identifier. Responsive to a determination that storage area identifier is a prefix of the input identifier, the input is processed without referring to a definition file for the managed information base. A response indicating a result is sent to the requester.
