Flaky particles having a particle size distribution in which when the particle diameter corresponding to a cumulative volume of 10% from the small-particle-diameter side is expressed by D10 and the particle diameter corresponding to a cumulative volume of 90% from the small-particle-diameter side is expressed by D90, then the value of D90/D10 is 2.0-3.0 and D10 is 4.7-25 mum, and the maximum particle diameter is 90 mum or smaller. Also provided is a brightening pigment which comprises flaky particles and, formed on at least part of the surface of the flaky particles, at least one member selected between a metal layer and a metal oxide layer and has a particle size distribution in which when the particle diameter corresponding to a cumulative volume of 10% from the small-particle-diameter side is expressed by D10 and the particle diameter corresponding to a cumulative volume of 90% from the small-particle-diameter side is expressed by D90, then the value of D90/D10 is 2.0-3.0 and D10 is 4.7-25 mum, and the maximum particle diameter is 90 mum or smaller.
