The work or tool-spindle of an automatic lathe which is to run at high speeds in forward or reverse direction is driven from a motor and gear-box through a single spindle to reversing means comprising two toothed wheels 7, 8 and a clutch 17. The forward drive to the spindle 6 operates when clutch surfaces 15, 13 are engaged and wheel 7, continuously driven from the main drive shaft, is supported by bearings 9 directly supported by the shaft. Wheel 8 is used for the reverse drive and relative rotation during neutral running between this wheel and spindle 6 is high. The bearings 10 for the wheel 8 are therefor supported on a separate sleeve 11 secured to the headstock and an air space 12 is arranged between this sleeve and the spindle. |
