Top end stops are applied to a fastener stringer chain using appts. which comprises a seal-cut punch accommodated in a housing which is movable horizontally in the direction of chain travel, and a shaping punch and its movable holder also inside the housing. A supersonic horn operates with the punches to apply and cut a plastic strip to the chain. The chain is gripped toughtly and cut a plastic strip to the chain. The chain is gripped toughtly between grippers and measuring rollers. Applying process can be carried out at one station.
