PURPOSE:To increase hardness, toughness and mechanical characteristics of a titled steel strip or wire by shortening the time at which the steel strip or wire is brought out from an extraction end of a heating furnace and is immersed into a cooling liquid, and immersing the steel strip or wire into the cooling liquid immediately from the extraction end. CONSTITUTION:A charging side 8 of a flexible steel strip or wire 3 for a cooling vessel 6 is provided to the position near to an extraction end side 7 of the steel strip or wire 3 in a heating furnace 1. A notched part 9' for overflow of a cooling liquid 10 or the like is provided to a charging side 8 of upper part of the vessel 6 as an overflow means and the cooling liquid 10 supplied to the vessel 6 is enabled to overflow therethrough. The steel strip or wire 3 which is brought out from the extraction part 7 of the furnace 1 is guided by the guide rollers 16, 16', 16'' and is cooled with overflowing cooling water 10 and thereafter is cooled with the cooling water 10 in vessel 6. |
