PURPOSE:To obtain a furanone derivative useful as an aldose reductase inhibitor in good yield in one step, by reacting a 2-oxocarboxylic acid derivative corresponding to each aimed compound with an aldehyde. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I [R<1> is aryl, heterocylic group or lower alkenyl which may be substituted] or a derivative thereof at the carboxyl group or a salt thereof is reacted with a compound expressed by formula II [R<2> is H, COOH, derivative thereof, OH, ar(lower)alkoxy or aryl which may be substituted; A is lower alkylene; n is 0 or 1] or a salt thereof normally in a commonly used solvent in the presence of a base or acid, prefer ably base to afford advantageously the aimed compound expressed by formula III, e.g. ethyl 3-[4-hydroxy-3-(2-naphthyl)-5-oxo-2,5-dihydro-2-furyl]propionate.
