For the compatible introduction of a 16:9 wide-screen format in existing television standards with the 4:3 format, the letterbox method is provided. In this method, the 16:9 picture information is displayed with black stripes at the top and bottom picture edge on 4:3 receivers. For a full-format display with unreduced resolution on a 16:9 receiver, additional information in the form a residual sideband modulation of the colour subcarrier can be transmitted in the lines in the black stripes. An integrated comb filter circuit for luminance/ chrominance separation is described in the publication "adaptive luminance/chrominance separation with sampling phases differently coupled to the colour subcarrier", R. Schweer, M. Plantholt, Fernseh- & Kinotechnik 12/1990. With appropriate modifications for the demodulation of additional information of CVBS letterbox signals, a digital comb filter decoder with this integrated circuit can be used as conditioner for a recording of all components of such letterbox signals with the aid of an S-VHS or Hi8 video recorder. <IMAGE>
