A thermoplastic polyurethane is provided to ensure improved self-extinguishing properties by using a mixture of red phosphorus and melamine cyanurate as a flame-proofing agent and magnesium hydroxide or aluminum hydroxide as a flame retarding aid. A thermoplastic polyurethane having a good self-extinguishing property includes organic diisocyanates, long-chain diols, and optionally, short-chain diols as a chain extender, wherein a mixture of red phosphorus and melamine cyanurate, and magnesium hydroxide or aluminum hydroxide are contained as a flame-proofing agent and a flame retarding aid, respectively. The flame retarding agent is contained in an amount of 1-15 parts by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of the total solids of the diisocyanates and diols.
