PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine, which accurately determines properties of fuel in use in an engine low-load operation condition. SOLUTION: In a predetermined operation condition of an engine, ignition timing CAFM of fuel injected into a combustion chamber is detected, and an ignition delay angle DCAM is calculated as a difference between the detected ignition timing CAFM and a target ignition timing CAFMM. An elapsed time correction amount DTM is calculated according to temperature TEGR of exhaust gas recirculated by an exhaust gas recirculation mechanism, an engine speed NE and elapsed time TM from a point of time when ignition timing detection is started. The ignition delay angle DCAM is corrected by the elapsed time correction amount DTM, and properties of fuel are estimated according to a corrected ignition delay angle DCAMC.
