PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the cooling efficiency of a liquid crystal display element while keeping a compact size. SOLUTION: An image display device includes a light source 10, lighting optical systems 11-27, the liquid crystal display elements 20 (R, G, B), a projection lens 28, a circuit board 5 provided with a control circuit chip 40 for controlling the liquid crystal display elements 20, a flexible cable 50 for connecting the liquid crystal display elements 20 and the control circuit chip 40, and an air blowing means 6 arranged outside an optical path in a liquid crystal display elements 20 (R, G, B) side with respect to the circuit board 5 to cool the liquid crystal display elements 20. The circuit board 5 is formed with an opening 42 for discharging air generated from the air blowing means 6 toward a face opposite to the liquid crystal display elements 20, and the flexible cable 50 is provided with an air guide means 53 for guiding the air to the opening 42 in a position opposed to an air flow passage to discharge the air from the opening 42.
