A system is disclosed for extracting ammonia from a wastewater stream, and for transferring the ammonia into a secondary water circuit, wherein the dissolved ammonium is electrolysed and transformed into gaseous nitrogen. The system makes use of a membrane of gas-permeable hydrophobic material. The system includes a wastewater circuit and a secondary water circuit, a membrane chamber 25 in which a membrane physically divides the chamber into a wastewater sub-chamber and a secondary water sub-chamber, the membrane prevents the passage of water between the two sub-chambers but is permeable to ammonia gas. The wastewater is raised to pH of 11, and a temperature of 50{C, to make the transfer of ammonia through the membrane more efficient. The ammonia gas is transferred into the water in the secondary water circuit, this is then transformed in an electrochemical reactor 49 into nitrogen gas. The system includes a gas disposal unit. Also claimed is a procedure for removing ammonia from a body of secondary water, in which pH sensors are used to control operation. |
