PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for arranging road index on map data in a navigation device, capable of rearranging a shield icon or another road index to be arranged in a boundary margin of a unit map data on a suitable position in the unit map data. SOLUTION: When determining arrangement of the shield icon in the unit map data, it is determined whether an arrangement position of the shield icon exists in the boundary margin of the periphery of the unit map data; when it exists, a position that does not overlap with the boundary margin on the unit map data is selected as a new arrangement position. Furthermore, it is determined whether other map information exists in a prescribed range; and when it does not exist, the selected position is used as the final arrangement position of the shield icon.
