A method of communicating data from a well 100, 102 includes applying a transformation, such as compression or encryption (at downhole control module DCM 116, 127 or converter 120, 126), to measurement data collected by sensors 104, 106 in the well and transferred to an intermediate communications device 124. The intermediate device in turn passes a subset of that data to a destination communications device 132 utlising a lossy compression algorithm. The lossy compression algorithm allows for more efficient use of bandwidth between the intermediate communications device and the destination device. The first and second transformations are configured such that meaningful data is recovered at the destination communication device even though only a subset of the original transformed data has been received. |
