PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately create PE (Processor Element) numbers and appropriately control, using the PE numbers, an SIMD microprocessor as a whole which is capable of substantially varying the number of PEs and arithmetic bit width by providing each PE with a plurality of arithmetic circuits, and operating the arithmetic circuits either individually or in association. SOLUTION: The SIMD microprocessor has a global processor and a plurality of processor elements, each of the processor elements including a plurality of arithmetic units. Under control of the global processor the connection configurations of the arithmetic units in the processor elements are changed in the same way so as to vary the number of computing units in the processor elements where arithmetic units are either connected together or held independent of one another, as well as the data width of data processed in the computing units.
