A method for regulating the movement of a train through an area controlled by radio signaling using an interface on the train comprises the steps of reporting the initial location of the train to a central control, the central control selecting a route start location for the train and transmitting the said start point to the train through the signaling equipment. The route start location preferably comprises a selected length of track from a reference point. On receipt, the driver uses the unit to send confirmation to the control centre, upon which the route is set and a movement authority sent to the train. After a set distance, which may be determined by odometer, GPS or trackside markers or equipment and is either fixed or relative to the reference point, the unit communicates with the control centre which determines if the train is reaching the end of the route or limit of authority. The control centre then selects a new route and issues a new start location. A particular advantage of the system is to allow work trains, heritage locomotives or other unfitted trains to work in an area of radio signaling such as ERTMS or ETCS. |
