A safety power shutdown apparatus of a set top box having a hard disk is provided to perform shutdown safely when an electricity fault is generated or a user pulls out a power plug during usage, thereby effectively preventing damage of an operating system or data stored in the hard disk caused by sudden power shutdown. A safety power cutoff apparatus of a set top box having hard disk comprises an AC(Alternating Current) input unit(101), an AC/DC(Direct Current) converter(102), a power detector(103), a sub energy source(104), a shutdown software(105), an operating system(106), a hard disk(107) and a CPU(Central Processing Unit)(108). The shutdown software is activated when AC power supply is stopped, and controls termination of a currently-operating software. The operating system terminates the currently-operating software under operation of the shutdown software. By supplying energy through the sub energy source while the operating software is terminated by control of the shutdown software if the AC power supply is suddenly shutdown, damage of data stored in the hard disk and damage of the operating system are prevented.
