The method involves operating a field device (F1) e.g. level measuring device, predominantly in an energy-saving mode, in which the field device is not activated by an superordinate unit (S1). The field device is operated sporadically in an active mode in which the superordinate unit is accessed on the field device, and data exchange between the field device and the superordinate unit is enabled. A change-over between the energy-saving mode and the active mode takes place at a communication time point between the superordinate unit and the field device.
