PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize errors associated with data writing to an optical disc. SOLUTION: A method for generating an optimized writing beam modulation signal used to encode data on the optical disc comprises steps of: providing a series of data symbols having nominal symbol lengths indicative of the data to be encoded; and generating the optimized writing beam modulation signal by individually varying the nominal symbol lengths of the series of data symbols so as to optimize readback characteristics of the optical disc.
