PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reproducing device and a reproducing method in which switching operation of subtitle information of Advanced Content of HD DVD standard is performed. SOLUTION: A reproducing device 10 has: a reading part 11 for reading image information, subtitle information, and management information from a recording medium; an operating part for outputting an operation signal; and a processing part in which a subtitle track number of the subtitle information is specified by Selected Substitute Track Number in Presentation Parameters in System Parameters in the management information read by the reading part, and a subtitle language code of the subtitle information is specified by Selected Substitute Language code in Presentation Parameters, and a subtitle language extension code is specified by Selected Substitute Language code Extension in Presentation Parameters, thereby one subtitle information included in the subtitle information is set and reproduced by specifying an on/off state of the subtitle information by Visibility of Substitute in Layout Parameters in System parameters.
