PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cloth quantity sensing device for a washing machine and its method which can improve the cloth quantity sensing precision and the efficiency of the washing machine by controlling a current, and detecting the speed of a motor. SOLUTION: In a BLDC (Blush-Less Direct Current) motor drive device of this cloth quantity sensing device for a washing machine, a torque command generator 101 generating a torque command signal, a torque control section 102 outputting a q-axis current command signal, a current control section 103 applying a current control signal to an inverter section 106 in response to the q-axis command signal and a d-axis current command signal, a speed detecting section 111 detecting the driving speed of the BLDC motor 109, a cloth quantity sensing section 112 comparing a speed detection signal with a reference speed stored in advance to sense a cloth quantity, and a current command section 113 applying the d-axis current command signal to the current control section 103 are included to configure the cloth quantity sensing device of a washing machine.
