An access point (130) for providing access to a cellular communication network (100) via a communication cell (150). The access point comprises signal processing logic (165) arranged to obtain at least one identifier, the at least one identifier being capable of identifying a respective wireless communication unit (114) authorised to connect to the cellular communication network (100) via the access point (130). The identifier may be the IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity), the TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity) or the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identifier) whch may be encrypted e.g. with a secure hash algorithm, or message digest algorithm, to maintain the security of the IMSI, TMSI or IMEI. The signal processing logic is further arranged to generate at least one system information message comprising the at least one identifier, and to broadcast the at least one system information message. Each wireless communication unit stores the broadcast identifiers and remembers which access points are permitted for use. Emergency calls may always be permitted. Legacy handsets require an alternate system. |
