A shock absorber comprises a first fluid chamber (41) and a second fluid chamber (42) separated by a piston (1). A damping valve (10) resists a fluid flow through a passage (2, 20) from the first fluid chamber(41) to the second fluid chamber (42). A pressure-responsive throttle (16) reduces a flow cross-sectional area of the passage (2, 20) when the pressure in the first fluid chamber (41) increases beyond the pressure in the second fluid chamber (42) by more than a predetermined pressure. A bypass valve (17c) connects the first fluid chamber (41) with the second fluid chamber (42) by bypassing the pressure-responsive throttle (16) when the pressure-responsive throttle (16) reaches a predetermined operation position. Provided with these valves, the shock absorber has different damping force characteristics in a high speed region and a middle speed region.
