PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light weight planar light source while maintaining strength. SOLUTION: The planar light source is provided with a discharging envelope 1 with a glass substrate 11 and a transformed glass substrate 12 installed facing each other, with its interior maintained air-tight and outside electrodes 51 and 52 installed in the discharge envelope 1. The transformed glass substrate 12 is composed of an undulation 121 and a periphery 122. When thickness of the glass substrate in the wave state 121 is d and thickness of the glass substrate in the periphery 122 is D, a relationship of d<D is satisfied.
