A computer system has a basic Input/output system (BIOS) ROM on its motherboard acting as a boot ROM. It also has an interface 130 on the motherboard for attaching an external memory module 110. When a memory module storing a BIOS is connected to the connector, the computer boots from the external module rather than from the ROM on its motherboard. This allows a computer with a corrupt BIOS ROM on its motherboard to boot. The computer may also have an adapter module 120 to connect the interface on the motherboard to an external adapter 122. The memory module may comprise a memory 112 and a connector 114. The memory may be a flash memory. The connector may be a 25 pin D-type connector and may be compatible with a low pin count (LPC) bus interface. |
