A system and a method for searching and providing contents, and a software storage medium are provided to allow a user to acquire the contents recorded and memorized in a memory device with the familiar operation like switching of TV channels. A storage unit stores a plurality of content items including first and second content items. An input unit(60) receives user input. A reproducing unit reproduces the first content item. A selecting unit skips to the second content item or selects a position in the first content item, wherein whether to skip to the second content item or select a position in the first content item is determined depending on the persistent time of the user input. A display unit(61) displays an indicator of the present reproducing position.
