The apparatus has a brake pedal (10) and a sensor (10a) to collect a braking force from a driver. A master cylinder (14) runs pressurized fluid in a circuit (I, II). Each circuit has a hydraulic fluid pressure reservoir (132) and an electrically driven pump (136) to convey hydraulic fluid under pressure. An ECU is provided which uses signals received from sensor control signals. Between the master cylinder and the reservoir a separator (150) is provided receiving a volume of hydraulic fluid not in the friction brakes but flowing with the hydraulic fluid pressure reservoir (132). An independent claim is included for a method.
