The present invention relates to a method for applying a tension against side portions of the shirt ( 1 ) put on the dummy ( 2 ) in a lateral direction and a device used for performing this method. An object of the present invention consists in enabling the side portions of the shirt ( 1 ) to be finished in tension easily, positively and neatly even if the sizes of the shirt ( 1 ) are different. The present invention is a method for finishing the side portions of a shirt under application of a first tensioning process in which the side pressing members ( 3 ) arranged vertically at both side portions of the dummy ( 2 ) are protruded by the driving device ( 4 ) up to the positions where they incline by their own weights to the side portions of the dummy ( 2 ) so as to apply tension to the side portions of the shirt ( 1 ) by the side pressing members ( 3 ) inclined by their own weights, and a second tensioning process in which upon pressing of the front and rear portions of the shirt ( 1 ), the driving device ( 4 ) is driven again to protrude further the side pressing members ( 3 ) and to finish in tension the side portions of the shirt ( 1 ). Then, the structure of the present invention to be used for these processes is formed to have the aforesaid side pressing members ( 3 ) and the driving device ( 4 ), and a controller ( 7 ) for controlling the driving device ( 4 ) to cause the side pressing members ( 3 ) to perform the first tensioning process and the second tensioning process.
