The present invention relates to an electrode structure and a pixel design for liquid crystal display devices which are the most suitable for an effective utilization of optically isotropic liquid crystals, and to optically isotropic liquid crystal materials and their preparation. The present invention discloses a structure of a liquid crystal display device comprising a first substrate (SUB1), a second substrate (SUB2), polarizing plates (PL1, PL2) provided on the first substrate (SUB1) and the second substrate (SUB2), respectively, a liquid crystal layer located between the first substrate and the second substrate, and pixel electrodes (PX) and common electrodes (CT), which are provided on the first substrate (SUB1), wherein the liquid crystal layer has such a property that optical anisotropy is induced therein by a change of the optically isotropic state caused by application of a voltage, either the pixel electrodes (PX) or the common electrodes (CT) are formed in an interdigital form and the other is formed in the form of a flat plate, and an electric field is applicable to the liquid crystal layer by a potential difference generated between the pixel electrodes (PX) and the common electrodes (CT).
|
