PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus in which a color document is read with brightness close to human visual sensitivity when monochromatically reading the color document, color sensitivity can be changeably set by a user, and uneven density can be reduced. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus according to the present invention comprises, in the image reading apparatus that reads a color document as a monochromatic image, a composite light source constituted of a plurality of light sources with different spectral distributions for irradiating the color document, a sensor for detecting intensity of reflected light from the color document, a light emission ratio setting section for setting a light emission ratio different for respective light sources to be changeable; and a light source control section for controlling effective quantities of light of the plurality of light sources in accordance with the set light emission ratio.
