A detergent composition suitable for cleaning steel, brass, copper or other metal surfaces comprises one or more surfactants of the formula <FORM:0935649/III/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 are alkyl groups having a total of from 11 to 14 carbon atoms, X is a monovalent cation (e.g. hydrogen or an alkali metal) and m has an average value in the range 12,5 to 17,5, in aqueous solution together with alkaline compound, e.g. sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and sodium metasilicate pentahydrate. Specification 935,650 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises a surfactant consisting of one or more sulphated polyoxyalkylated tertiary-carbinamines of the formula:- <FORM:0935649/IV(a)/1> wherein R1, R2 and R3 are alkyl groups having a total of from 11 to 14 carbon atoms, X is a monovalent cation (e.g. hydrogen or an alkali metal) and m has an average value in the range 12,5 to 17,5. The above compounds are prepared by sulphating polyoxyalkylated tertiarycarbinamines of the formula:- <FORM:0935649/IV(a)/2> using, for example, sulphur trioxide in carbon tetrachloride or concentrated sulphuric acid or chlorosulphoric acid at temperatures of 60 DEG - 65 DEG C.
