An apparatus and a method for correcting gamma in a digital image processing device are provided to perform adaptive gamma correction by applying a gamma curve changed according to the brightness level of an image signal detected in the digital image processing device to obtain a clear image without a loss of an output brightness level. A brightness level detecting unit(430) detects a brightness level from an image signal generated by photographing. A gamma curve calculating unit(435) moves start or end points of a gamma curve of correcting an input brightness level into a predetermined output brightness level as much as the detected brightness level to calculate a new gamma curve. A gamma correcting unit(440) corrects and outputs the input brightness level of the image signal by the calculated gamma curve.
