A graphical output layout management system for arranging and maintaining graphically displayed output of programs executing on a computing system is disclosed. The graphical output layout management system comprises graphical elements containing data representing displayable content of a program and presenters defining display states for the graphical elements. A presenter using elements corresponding to a child of the presenter can determine whether the presenter requires a chained presenter. A presenter of a particular type maintains a layout description for a corresponding graphical element. The graphical output layout management system further comprises a notification handler object configured to receive notification regarding changes effecting the set of presenters associated with a particular view, accumulate dirtiness information, and determine whether the set of presenters require updating and a presenter system, including a presenter host interface comprising a method for preparing a layout for a view, according to a set of presenters associated with graphical elements contained within the view. The presenters provide a plurality of fittings for the data for selection by a user.
