PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical module which can surely detect the fitting of an optical connector, and to provide an optical communication system. SOLUTION: When the optical connector 5 is fitted, a casing 50 of the optical connector 5 is engaged with a module case 200 of the optical module 2, tip faces of connecting members 213A, 213B are brought into surface contact and made short-circuited with a pair of electrode parts 225A, 225B, and 225C, 225D. Thus, the fitting of the optical connector 5 is detected. Since the electrode parts 225A to 225D are short-circuited by the surface contact and the electrode parts are resistant to abrasion and disconnection, the fitting of the optical connector 5 can be detected surely.
