A method and an apparatus for reducing MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group) noise by using wavelet transform are provided to set up a specific block boundary as a filtering area and apply one-dimensional filter to the filtering area, thereby effectively removing blocking noise, shortening a filtering time, and reducing image blurring. A method for reducing MPEG(Moving Picture Experts Group) noise by using wavelet transform comprises the following steps of: obtaining an edge map separating a block boundary from an input image(S410); setting up a predetermined number of pixels as a basic filtering area around the block boundary and resetting up an adaptive filtering area according to the obtained edge map(S420,S440); and performing one-dimensional LPF(Low Pass Filtering) to the adaptive filtering area in a horizontal direction and a vertical direction to remove the MPEG noise(S470).
