<p>The generator has a cylindrical bipolar x-ray tube (102) with an anode (110) and a cathode (108) located at opposed ends of the tube on an axis. A cathode voltage multiplier (202) and an anode voltage multiplier (204) are arranged in shadow zones created by the anode and the cathode. The multipliers are connected to the tube and are located behind respective inputs of the cathode and the anode in the tube.</p>
