The magnetic recording medium includes a data region (101) for recording data using the recording head (501), a mask pattern region (102) in which an area in which servo information can be magnetically recorded and an area in which information cannot be magnetically recorded are formed in a predetermined pattern, and an initial positioning region (106) in which a magnetic area and a nonmagnetic area that record information for positioning one of the recording head (501) and the reproduction head (502) in the mask pattern region (102).
