The device has an image generating sensor (2) for generating an image of an object (3) or partial area of the object that is to be tested, and an evaluation unit (4) for evaluation of the image using image processing. A projection unit (5) is provided for projecting a mark of an area of a reference object, where the area is provided in a detection area of the sensor and the mark is determined by a user. The evaluation unit is provided for defining test criteria by evaluating the marked area of the reference object, where the test criteria are considered during evaluation of image. An independent claim is also included for a method of configuring a visual inspection device.
